These are the general board rules. Make sure you've read and understood them!

If you're looking for the game's rules, they're over here.

Forum bans may be handed out on a three-consecutive-strikes-out policy: if you break three general rules in quick succession or all at once, you may get your access to posting in the forums temporarily or permanently suspended.

General Rules

These rules are always in effect.

Exploits
If a bug is exploitable, don't post about it. If you had an idea that might constitute cheating, don't post about it. PM a mod or admin about it so that other people don't get the idea to exploit the bug/cheat with your idea.
Punishment: Verbal warning. Ban if it's an obvious attempt at gamebreaking, but just verbal warning if it's obviously not intentional.

Spam
This is pretty obvious. Don't spam. Pointless messages, advertisement, frequent one-word replies and "bumping" topics all qualify as spam.
Punishment: Verbal warning. Warn when repeat offender. Ban if behavior continues after warn.

Trolling/Flaming
This is also pretty obvious. Be courteous to each other. Don't harass, troll, insult, flame, humiliate or shame other members. If a member was rude to you, contact a moderator instead of starting a flamewar. In the event of a flamewar, there's no "right" or "wrong" for punishment - all flamers get equal treatment.
Punishment: Warn. Ban if behavior continues after warn.

Privacy Breach
Respect the privacy of other members. Do not post any personal or revealing information about other members, even if you don't name names. You must also not post revealing private information about any person, like name, address, passwords, et cetera.
Punishment: Warn, forum ban or ban depending on the gravity of the situation. Ban if behavior continues after warn.

Mod Respect
Mods post warnings publicly. If you get warned, heed the warning. Do not reply with disrespectful remarks. If you wish to argue the warn, contact a different mod about it over PM. Respect mods as you would normal members.
Punishment: Forum warn with the offender being put on a three strikes system. Forum ban after three strikes. Full ban if behavior persists.

Illegal/Mature Content
Links to illegal contents like MP3s, ROMs, warez, and any other such material are strictly forbidden across the entire site. Similarly, links to content unsuited for minors, pornography and graphic/violent material are also prohibited.
Punishment: Instant ban.

Language
Pokémon is a franchise mainly directed at younger players, so watch your language while you're in the board. Swear words are okay on occasion, but being polite goes a long way. Derogatory/inflammatory words, racist lingo, and any such vocabulary constitutes a more serious offense, expect a warn or ban depending on the gravity in that case.
Punishment: Verbal warning. Warn or ban when the behavior continues.

Slurs/Prejudice
Any form of prejudice is unacceptable. Slurs, racism, homophobia, and any other forms of discrimination are absolutely not allowed.
Punishment: Ranges from verbal warning to forum posting ban if done on the forums, full ban if behavior persists.

Foreign Languages
Use only English in the forums, please. An occasional word or two in other languages are fine, but don't post in any language other than English.
Punishment: Verbal warning. Warn or ban when the behavior continues, depends especially on the content of the message.

Readability
Everything you post must be easily readable. This means no invisible text, no tiny text, no gigantic text. Your smallest text should be no smaller than 'size=85' or 'small' in the drop down menu, like this.
Punishment: Verbal warning. Forum warn for repeat offenses, with the possibility of a forum ban if unreadable text is used to break other rules.

Mod Impersonation/Mini-Modding
The mods exist for a reason - leave handing out warnings, reminding people of the rules, et cetera, to the mods. If someone broke the rules, report them and the mods will take action - don't take it upon yourself to let them know what they should do.
Punishment: Verbal warning. Warn or ban when the behavior is malicious.

Spoilers
Spoilers for anything, including this game, should come with a spoiler warning. Try to avoid game spoilers as much as possible while in beta, let other people find their way around too.
Punishment: Verbal warning. Warn when the behavior continues.

You're free to post links to your personal sites, but you can't advertise commercial websites or sales. If advertising your website or a non-commercial site, keep images small (smaller than 200x50) or textless. Don't make topics for the sole purpose of advertisement.
Punishment: Verbal warning/deletion of content. Ban if the behavior persists.

Party Image
Do not add your party image to the body of your posts. Keep it in your signature.
Punishment: Verbal warning. Warn when the behavior continues.

Begging
Do not ask other users for Pokémon, money, items, or any other thing, unless they offer first.
Punishment: Verbal warning. Warn when the behavior continues.

Posting Rules

Making New Topics

Repeat Topics
Before posting, make sure another similar, active topic doesn't already exist. If a similar topic is found to exist, a moderator will lock your topic.
Punishment: Verbal warning. Warn when repeat offender. Ban when obvious troll.

Wrong Section
When posting a topic, make sure you're at the proper subforum. Don't post a help topic in the bug reports section.
Punishment: Verbal warning. Topic will be moved to the proper subforum.

Pointless Topics
This qualifies as spam - don't just post a whole new topic to talk about how much you like Pokémon.
Punishment: Verbal warning. Topic gets locked. Spam punishment applies if behavior persists.

Replying to Topics

Double-Posting
Avoid double-posting. The forums have an edit feature - use it to alter your comment if nobody's replied after you. You can only double-post if the topic hasn't seen any new replies in a while and/or there's a justifiable need for an update. "Bumping" is not allowed EXCEPT for trade topics, which may be bumped once every 24 hours (with the exception of Auction threads, which may be bumped once every 12 hours).
Punishment: Verbal warning.

Off-Topicness
When replying to someone else's topic, make sure your comment is relevant to what's being said. Unrelated comments are considered spam.
Punishment: Spam punishment applies.

Necroposting
If a topic is very old, avoid posting a reply unless you have something relevant to say. Topics that have gone over a month without replies fall into this rule.
Punishment: Verbal warning.

Signature Rules

The following rules are automatically checked by the forum settings, but this section is here anyway so that you know what the limitations are:

You can use BBCode, links and smilies in your signature.

Signatures can have a maximum of 1000 characters.

Signatures can have a maximum of 10 links.

Signatures can have a maximum font size of 150%.

Images in signatures may be a maximum of 450px wide by 300px tall.

You can only display your own party in your forum signature. You may not display other users' parties.

In addition to those, your signature must NOT:

- be taller than 500px on a 1024x768 resolution, so people don't have to scroll too much to see past it.
- contain animated gifs that rapidly shift colors. An animated image is okay, an epilepsy-inducing animation is not.
- contain advertisement. You can link to your own website, but you can't advertise any sort of products. Regular forum rules apply here. Go here for a detailed explanation.
- contain offensive language or images of any sort. Regular forum rules apply here.

Avatar icons must also conform to these rules. Please ensure that whatever image you select as your icon, it must not contain profanity nor may it consist of any .gifs with rapidly shifting colors. The image content must furthermore be suitable to a young audience. Again, regular forum rules apply.

Edited out your signature so you don't end up gaining free ad points from a topic often read by other users, sorry about that!

Linked images do count as links.

@lumpypaint: Please let mods and admins answer questions about rules.

I think spamfest's forum description pretty much covers it though. As in if you're going to post in that forum for the first time, you would probably read the description to get a clue about what you can do there.

Could we please not post in reply to this topic unnecessarily? If you have questions about the rules, sure, go ahead. If you have suggestions, go to the appropriate forum. If you have answers, withhold them - a mod or admin will get to questions about rules, as I stated earlier.

Please don't post in this topic unless you have questions about the rules.

I have two questions regarding to the rules and their wording.

"You can only display your own party in your forum signature. You may not display other users' parties."
I assume this also goes as a "rule" on other forums? As in, I see someone I know from both there and here, and s/he has two different VDex parties in his/her signature on that other forum, can I give a mod here a heads-up so that the mod can take action?

"Use only English in the forums, please. An occasional word or two in other languages are fine, but don't post in any language other than English."
What about country-clubs? If someone were to make an Español People (is that even proper Spanish?) club, would they be allowed to talk nothing but Spanish in there (assuming it's not going against any other rules)?

You can only speak English in the forums except for when asking for a translation, or when using short phrases and such which are obvious from context or have a translation. Period.

The party signature rule applies only to this forum.

When you say that Bumping is not allowed except for trade topics, a), does that include Quests? And b) is there any restrictions on bumping topics you made that day?

You need to wait 24 hours (or 12 for auctions) from your last post to bump. Bumping quests isn't allowed, but you can post to update or close it.

Bumping means making a post that serves no purpose other than bringing the topic back to the top of the list.

A few words in a different language are fine ("danke" or "hallo" to say "thanks" and "hello" in German, for example), but unless you're asking for translation help, conversations in any language other than English are not allowed, even if you do provide the translation. A mod would step in to remind the members of the rules.

Nothing, although yours is highly inappropriate in light of recent events. Please make a new account.

Can we have conversations in Binary, thereby making the point trying to translate it, like a riddle?

No, binary is treated like foreign languages. Conversations in foreign languages aren't allowed, even if translation is provided.
